Saint Pancras (d. 304) was a young Christian martyr who is venerated as one of the saints of the early Church. He was just 14 years old when he was arrested during the persecution of Christians under Emperor Diocletian. Pancras, originally from Phrygia (modern-day Turkey), had moved to Rome with his guardian. When he refused to renounce his Christian faith, he was condemned to death. His courage and unwavering commitment to Christ despite his youth made him a symbol of steadfast faith. Pancras’ relics are housed in the Church of St. Pancras in Rome, and he is celebrated on May 12.
The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) has decreed that this is a Holy Day of Memorial (Optional) to be observed in Canada.
