St. Peter Damian (OM)

February 21

Saint Peter Damian, born in 1007 in Italy, was a Benedictine monk, reformer, and cardinal who played a significant role in the Church’s efforts to address corruption and restore discipline. Orphaned at a young age, he was raised by his brother and later joined the Benedictine order. Known for his ascetic lifestyle, theological writings, and advocacy for clerical celibacy, Peter Damian worked tirelessly to reform the clergy and protect the Church from moral decay. He was appointed cardinal in 1057 and is considered a Doctor of the Church. His feast day is celebrated on February 21st, honouring his devotion and reform efforts.

The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) has decreed that this is a Holy Day of Memorial (Optional) to be observed in Canada.
