Saint Matthias was the apostle chosen to replace Judas Iscariot after his betrayal and death. According to the Acts of the Apostles, Matthias was selected by the remaining eleven apostles through prayer and the casting of lots. He had been a follower of Jesus from His baptism by John the Baptist until the Ascension, ensuring he was a witness to Jesus’ ministry. Matthias is remembered for his steadfast faith and commitment to the apostolic mission. He is traditionally believed to have preached in various regions, including Cappadocia and Ethiopia, where he is thought to have been martyred. His feast day is celebrated on May 14.
The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) has decreed that this is a Holy Feast Day to be observed in Canada.
