Saint Eugène de Mazenod (1782–1861) was a French bishop and founder of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate, a religious congregation dedicated to evangelization and serving the poor. Born into a noble family, Eugène experienced a turbulent childhood, marked by exile during the French Revolution. He later studied for the priesthood and became deeply committed to addressing the spiritual and social needs of the marginalized. As bishop of Marseilles, he focused on educating clergy and revitalizing the Church. His legacy includes a vibrant missionary order, which today operates in over 60 countries. Eugène was canonized in 1995 for his profound faith and service.
The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) has decreed that this is a Holy Day of Memorial (Optional) to be observed in Canada.
