St. Bernadine of Siena (OM)

May 20, 2026

Saint Bernardine of Siena (1380–1444) was an Italian Franciscan friar, preacher, and theologian known for his fervent evangelization and devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus. A prolific preacher, Bernardine traveled extensively across Italy, promoting moral reform and religious devotion, particularly among the laity. He is credited with popularizing the use of the “IHS” monogram, symbolizing the name of Jesus, and emphasizing the power of the Holy Name in prayer. A strong advocate for peace, Bernardine also worked to reconcile feuding factions in Italy. He was canonized in 1450 and is celebrated for his deep spirituality and commitment to evangelism.

The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) has decreed that this is a Holy Day of Memorial (Optional) to be observed in Canada.
