The Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, celebrated on May 31, honours the moment when Mary, pregnant with Jesus, visited her cousin Elizabeth, who was pregnant with John the Baptist. In this encounter, Elizabeth’s baby leapt in her womb, recognizing the presence of the Saviour. Filled with the Holy Spirit, Elizabeth praised Mary as the mother of the Lord. Mary responded with the Magnificat, a hymn of praise to God for His greatness and mercy. The feast highlights the importance of humility, service, and joy in the presence of God. It emphasizes the deep bond between Mary, Elizabeth, and the work of salvation.
The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) has decreed that this is a Holy Feast Day to be observed in Canada.
