Saints Marcellinus and Peter were early Christian martyrs who were executed during the reign of Emperor Diocletian in the 3rd century. Marcellinus, a pope, and Peter, a layman, were arrested for refusing to renounce their faith. Despite their imprisonment and suffering, they remained steadfast in their belief. They were eventually executed—Marcellinus by beheading and Peter by being stabbed. Their martyrdom is a powerful witness to their dedication to Christ. They are commemorated together on June 2. Their story highlights the strength of faith in the face of persecution and the importance of standing firm in one’s beliefs, even unto death.
The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) has decreed that this is a Holy Day of Memorial (Optional) to be observed in Canada.
