St. Elizabeth of Portugal, born in 1271, was a queen renowned for her deep faith, humility, and charity. She married King Denis of Portugal, and despite facing personal challenges, including a troubled marriage, she dedicated her life to serving the poor and promoting peace. Known for her acts of mercy, she built hospitals, cared for the sick, and resolved conflicts, even mediating between her husband and political opponents. After her husband’s death, Elizabeth withdrew from royal life, becoming a member of the Third Order of St. Francis. She was canonized in 1625, and her feast day is celebrated on July 4.
The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) has decreed that this is a Holy Day of Memorial (Optional) to be observed in Canada.
