Giving Tuesday Now
Support Martyrs' Shrine in Light of COVID-19
What is #GivingTuesdayNow?
#GivingTuesdayNow is a global day of giving and unity that will take place on May 5, 2020 as an emergency response to the unprecedented need caused by COVID-19.
The global day of action will rally people around the world to tap into the power of human connection and strengthen communities at the grassroots level. We invite all Canadians to join us in demonstrating the power of kindness and generosity.
How can I support Martyrs' Shrine on #GivingTuesdayNow?
You can make a one-time or monthly contribution to our campaign to help Martyrs' Shrine close the financial gap caused by COVID-19, and continue its operations throughout the coming months.
Sharing our campaign with your friends, family, and fellow community members will also help us get the word out to share our needs.
How has COVID-19 impacted Martyrs' Shrine?
As a result of COVID-19, our May opening has had to be postponed. We hope to open as soon as we can, but currently we will not reopen until July 4th 2020.
We anticipate a drastic drop in visitation. We rely on the generosity of those who come to fund our operations. As a non-profit charity, we do not generate profit, so our cash flow will be greatly reduced. As a result, we are not able to hire our regular seasonal staff.
Without our staffing, we cannot support our usual pilgrimages and have had to postpone all of them until 2021.
What does Martyrs' Shrine do?
As Canada's National Shrine dedicated to the lives of the North American Martyrs, we usually welcome over 100,000 pilgrims annually who journey to the shrine seeking healing through the intercession of St. Jean de Brébeuf and his companions. This is supported by the sacraments offered at the shrine as well as the ministry of prayer which supports prayer intentions at both announced and unannounced Masses, two annual novenas, and regular intentions prayed for by the Jesuit fathers.
Over 3,000 elementary and high school students participate in educational programmes at Martyrs' Shrine to strengthen their faith and connection to God.
We support 5 local parishes with their ministry, as well as provide spiritual support to the Waypoint Centre for Mental Health, the local Cancer Support Centre, as well as local high schools.
The Jesuit fathers who work at Martyrs' Shrine also provide community outreach in various ways throughout the local area and the GTA by facilitating retreats, holding chaplaincy roles for various service groups, as well as spiritual care.
Physically, we care for over 180 acres of land, include 75 acres that are landscaped and encrusted with shrines, monuments, statues, and prayerful spaces that welcome visitors for time of peaceful contemplation and a deepening of their relationship with Jesus Christ. This land is crowned by the Church of St. Joseph, which houses the relics of the Canadian martyrs and serves as a historically-significant landmark building that requires ongoing care and preservation.
