St. Sylvester I (OM)

December 31, 2029

Event Series Event Series (See All)

Saint Sylvester I was pope from 314 to 335, during a pivotal time in Christian history. He served as pope under the Roman Emperor Constantine the Great, overseeing the church’s transition from persecution to state-sponsored religion following Constantine’s Edict of Milan in 313. Sylvester is often credited with overseeing the construction of major Christian basilicas in Rome, including St. Peter’s Basilica. While little is known about his personal life, he is remembered for his leadership during the early years of Christianity’s legalization. Saint Sylvester’s feast day is celebrated on December 31, marking the end of the year in the Christian calendar.

The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) has decreed that this is a Holy Day of Memorial (Optional) to be observed in Canada.
