St. Jerome Emiliani, born in 1481 in Venice, Italy, was a priest and founder of the Congregation of Somaschi. After a dramatic conversion, he dedicated his life to serving the poor, orphans, and marginalized. He is particularly known for his work in caring for abandoned children, establishing orphanages, and promoting education. Jerome’s deep devotion to the Eucharist and his commitment to social justice made him a respected figure in the Church. He died in 1537 and was canonized in 1767. His feast day, celebrated on February 8th, honors his selfless dedication to the care and education of youth.
The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) has decreed that this is a Holy Day of Memorial (Optional) to be observed in Canada.
