St. Anthony Zaccaria, born in 1502 in Cremona, Italy, was a priest and founder of the Clerics Regular of St. Paul, also known as the Barnabites. Deeply influenced by the Eucharist and devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, he sought to revive the spiritual life of the Church during the Renaissance period. St. Anthony emphasized renewal through prayer, community life, and education. He worked to promote the holiness of the clergy and laity alike and was a strong advocate for the pastoral care of the sick. He died at 36 in 1539 and was canonized in 1897. His feast day is July 5.
The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) has decreed that this is a Holy Day of Memorial (Optional) to be observed in Canada.
