St. Ansgar (OM)

February 3

St. Ansgar, known as the “Apostle of the North,” was a 9th-century missionary who played a crucial role in spreading Christianity in Scandinavia, particularly in Denmark and Sweden. Born in France around 801, he became a monk and was sent by Emperor Louis the Pious to evangelize the Nordic regions. Despite many challenges, including Viking opposition, Ansgar established churches and monasteries, becoming the Archbishop of Hamburg-Bremen. He is revered for his dedication and perseverance in spreading the Christian faith. His feast day is celebrated on February 3rd, recognizing his missionary work and his efforts to bring the Gospel to Northern Europe.

The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) has decreed that this is a Holy Day of Memorial (Optional) to be observed in Canada.
