* Ash Wednesday

February 17, 2021

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent in the Christian liturgical calendar, observed 46 days before Easter. It is a day of fasting, repentance, and reflection, inviting Christians to prepare for the season of Lent. During Mass or services, ashes, typically made from the burned palms of the previous year’s Palm Sunday, are applied to the foreheads of the faithful in the shape of a cross. The priest often says, “Remember that you are dust, and to dust, you shall return,” reminding worshippers of their mortality and need for repentance. Ash Wednesday sets the tone for the 40-day journey of prayer, fasting, and penance leading up to Easter.

(*) denotes that Ash Wednesday is a moveable observance date. This date is determined based on Easter Sunday, a moveable feast based on the lunar and solar cycles of the Jewish calendar.
